Smooth Skin Restoration with Scar Revision

Although there’s nothing wrong with having a scar or two, you may decide that you’d like to be rid of those imperfections and restore your smooth, healthy skin. If you’re interested in an effective way to eliminate scarring, you may be a good fit for scar revision surgery.

What Is Scar Revision?

Scar revision surgery is a cosmetic procedure performed to reduce or eliminate the appearance of scarring. In many cases, scar revision will be able to make a scar virtually invisible. However, there are other times in which the goal will be to revise the scar enough for it to blend in with the surrounding skin and be less noticeable.

How Is Scar Revision Performed?

Depending on the specifics of the targeted scar and the patient’s preferences, there are several effective scar revision methods:

Excision

Excision is a popular technique for cases of severe scarring. This method involves using a scalpel to cut away the scar and the surrounding damaged tissue. Typically, a skin graft is then used to give the skin in the area a natural appearance.

Subcision

Subcision is a scar revision technique primarily used for indented scarring. During this procedure, a needle is inserted into the skin and used to break up the fibers that connect the scar to the underlying tissue. This raises the scarring to the same elevation as the surrounding skin and creates new connective tissue to promote healing.

Punch Elevation

Used mainly to revise acne scars, punch elevation is a technique in which a special punch tool is used to remove small quantities of scar tissue. This allows the level of the scar to be elevated without damaging the surrounding tissue. As a result, the scarring becomes less pronounced.

There are also several non-surgical methods for scar revision, including chemical peels, laser treatments, and dermal fillers.

Benefits of Scar Revision

For individuals dealing with unsightly scarring, scar revision surgery can provide various benefits, including:

Reduces or eliminates the appearance of scarring
Treats scars from surgery, injuries, or acne
Creates smoother, more youthful-looking skin
Involves a minimally invasive procedure
Offers permanent results
Provides natural-looking results
Allows for customizable treatment

Your Scar Revision Consultation

Before your scar revision procedure, you’ll have a consultation with Dr. Landford to ensure that you’re a good candidate and put together your treatment plan. During this meeting, the doctor will also answer all of your questions and provide you with thorough details about the treatment. You’ll also be able to decide what type of scar revision method you prefer and discuss your specific aesthetic goals with Dr. Landford.

What Should I Expect During the Procedure?

Scar revision surgery is generally performed as an outpatient procedure, and you’ll likely be administered local anesthesia with IV sedation. Once the anesthesia has taken effect, Dr. Landford will begin removing and adjusting tissue as needed to minimize the appearance of your scarring. If necessary, she will then perform a skin graft to ensure natural-looking results. Overall, scar revision surgery typically takes around an hour to complete.

How Long Is the Recovery Time?

You will likely experience some soreness, swelling, and discoloration in the treatment area after your scar revision procedure, but these symptoms should gradually subside on their own. Dr. Landford will give you detailed aftercare instructions to make sure that your skin can heal properly.

Most patients require two or three days of rest after the surgery before resuming their normal routines. Additionally, it’s wise to wait three or four weeks before engaging in strenuous physical activity.

Am I a Candidate for Scar Revision?

Individuals who are unhappy with the appearance of scarring on their body could be good candidates for scar revision surgery. Ideal candidates for the treatment should:

Be in generally good physical health
Have the desire to reduce or eliminate the appearance of scarring on their body
Have no active breakouts or skin infections near the treatment area
Have realistic expectations
Be a non-smoker

How Long Will It Take To See Results After Scar Revision Surgery?

Although you should immediately notice an improvement in the appearance of your scarring after the procedure, it can take several months for the final results to become visible. In some cases, it can even take a full year for the skin to heal completely.
