Rhinoplasty surgery (sometimes often referred to as a “nose job”) is easily one of the most popular and frequently performed plastic surgery procedures in the country.

Preserving Your Ethnic Identity with African American Rhinoplasty

The right rhinoplasty procedure can help you enjoy an enhanced sense of facial harmony by correcting the nose you were born with, so you can show the world your ideal look.  It’s also an excellent choice for those who may be having trouble breathing, as it can clear your nasal passages and enable you to breathe properly.

These dual benefits make rhinoplasty an ideal choice for many patients, but it’s important that your surgeon is able to preserve your unique facial features and ensure that the procedure does not impact your ethnic identity.

Dr. Jennifer Porter is a facial plastic surgery specialist, having developed her own special techniques for African American rhinoplasty. She excels at creating results that enhance and rejuvenate her patients’ looks without compromising or impacting the features that are indicative of their unique ethnic backgrounds. If you’d like to learn more about African American rhinoplasty and how it can help you, reach out to us at our Bethesda, Maryland offices and speak with a member of our team to set up your initial consultation today.

How This Technique Can Help

African American rhinoplasty is similar to traditional rhinoplasty. The primary difference is that it will be performed using a surgical technique that is specifically designed to preserve the ethnic identifiers that help contribute to your personal identity. African American rhinoplasty is often performed in a way that aims to preserve the following characteristics:

  • A wider nose
  • A shorter nose
  • A prominent columella
  • A wider nasal tip
  • A wider structure

Your Rhinoplasty Operation

The Consultation

Before the day of your rhinoplasty surgery, you’ll have a consultation with Dr. Porter. This will give her a chance to explain the procedure in detail and also gives you an opportunity to ask any questions that you might have about your upcoming surgery.

The Procedure

Your rhinoplasty surgery will be performed while you are under general anesthesia. Dr. Porter will shape your nose according to your customized surgical plan and you’ll be able to return home the same day after spending some time in our recovery area.

The Recovery

After your procedure, you’ll experience some bruising and swelling that will take about one week to subside. After a week, you’ll be able to return to work and other light activities. Your swelling should have dissipated more completely after about six weeks.

Our practice will remain available to you at all times during your recovery period, and we’ll also be sure to schedule follow-up appointments with you so we can monitor your healing progress and ensure that you’re doing well. We’ll also provide you with a clear set of aftercare instructions well in advance of your procedure.
