How Septoplasty Can Help

Your nasal septum is a thin strip made of both bone and cartilage that runs up and down the center of your nose. This strip of tissue works to separate your nose into two distinct nasal passages, enabling you to breathe clearly and properly thanks to the help of a thin, sticky membrane referred to as the mucosa. For any number of reasons, from genetics to injury or trauma, the septum can become dislodged or displaced. This is known as a deviated septum.

Whether you’ve been dealing with a deviated septum since you were born or have been experiencing problems related to a deviated septum after some type of injury or trauma, you’ve probably noticed that your breathing isn’t quite the same as it used to be.

A deviated septum can cause breathing problems, interrupt your ability to sleep properly throughout the night and leave your nose looking crooked and slightly disproportionate.

Luckily enough, Dr. Jennifer Porter, MD is here to help. As a double board-certified, fellowship-trained facial plastic surgery specialist, Dr. Porter offers her patients the experience and expertise needed to correct their deviated septums. She’ll work with you to address your issues and restore your quality of life, so you can breathe clearly once more. If you’d like to learn more about septoplasty and how it can help you, reach out to Chevy Chase Facial Plastic Surgery in Bethesda, Maryland and set up your initial consultation today.

Is Septoplasty Right for Me?

Your Procedural Experience

Keeping You Comfortable

Your septoplasty procedure will be performed while you are under general anesthesia, so you will be completely asleep during the entire procedure. You will be kept as comfortable as possible and won’t feel anything, though this will mean that you will need a friend to drive you home once the surgery is complete. While you will be able to return home as soon as the surgery is over, you’ll still be extremely groggy as the anesthesia wears off.

Creating Your Results

Dr. Porter will manipulate your septum in a way that resolves any deviation and leaves you with the ability to breathe clearly. She will do this by first separating the mucosal lining from the septum, at which point she’ll be able to reshape its structure and placement according to your customized surgical plan. The operation typically takes one to two hours to complete, at which point Dr. Porter will carefully close your incisions.

After the Operation

When your surgery is complete, you’ll spend some time resting comfortably in our recovery area. After a bit of time, you’ll be able to return home. Before the surgery, we’ll give you clear aftercare instructions and a detailed timeline that outlines what you can expect after your surgery. Most patients have a very brief recovery experience, and we’ll schedule follow-up appointments to remove your splints and ensure that you’re healing properly.
