Horizontal crease lines and folds on the forehead are caused by fatty deposits and the effects of gravity. As we mature, our subdermal tissue collects and stores fat, and the fibrous material that supports the skin may become denser. A brow lift can virtually eliminate these skin folds as well as reduce the appearance of fine lines and frown wrinkles that occur between the eyebrows. This is a minimally invasive, surgical procedure that produces long-term results. At Chevy Chase Facial Plastic Surgery, we offer complete consultation services for those who are considering a brow lift procedure.
When brow lines develop, it makes the individual look far too serious. Quite often, mature adults become concerned about their facial features because the eyes appear narrowed, shadows form in the creases of the forehead skin and the eyes themselves look tired because of the presence of small wrinkles on or adjacent to the lids. A brow lift can correct this problem. The skin is pulled upward and the excess fatty tissue is removed. The result is smoother skin, and the wrinkles no longer appear when the individual smiles or frowns.
An anesthetic is usually given, which makes the patient more comfortable during the surgery. We mark out the areas where the frown lines and forehead folds occur, and we notice the depth and thickness of these folds. There are generally two different types of brow lifts. A traditional lift begins with an incision that runs near the hairline. The skin is then pulled upward, the excess removed and the incision closed. The stitches are then removed about a week later. An endoscopic lift involves making several smaller incisions at specific locations along the hairline. A small scope with a camera is inserted so that the location of excess tissue can be determined. This tissue is then removed. At Chevy Chase Facial Plastic Surgery, Dr. Porter takes the endoscopic approach, as this generally encourages a quicker and more comfortable recovery.
Bandages must be worn for several days following a brow lift. We will also give the patient instructions about how to care for their bandages. Medications such as antibiotics will likely be prescribed. The healing time varies, but averages about two weeks.
