Revitalize Your Hands

Another area where signs of aging skin often appear is on the backs of the hands. For many of us, the skin on our hands will gradually develop wrinkles, loss of volume, laxity, and various other imperfections. At Chevy Chase Facial Plastic Surgery, we offer hand rejuvenation treatment so that you can keep the skin of your hands smooth, healthy, and youthful.

What Is Hand Rejuvenation?

Hand rejuvenation is a broad term for several cosmetic treatments used to reduce signs of aging skin on the back of the hands. There are both surgical and non-surgical options available for hand rejuvenation depending on the preferences of the patient. With all of these treatments, the goal is to create firmer, healthier skin on the hands.

Hand Rejuvenation Treatment Options

If you’re interested in hand rejuvenation, you’ll have several effective treatment options to choose from:

Fat Transfer

Fat transfer hand rejuvenation is the main surgical option for patients looking to achieve more youthful-looking hands. During this procedure, a small amount of excess fat is removed from another area of the body. It is then injected into the backs of the hands to create plumper, smoother skin and restore lost volume.

Dermal Fillers

If you prefer a non-invasive hand rejuvenation treatment, certain injectable dermal fillers can temporarily reduce signs of aging skin on the hands. A couple of effective examples are Restylane Lyft, which uses hyaluronic acid, and Radiesse, which uses calcium hydroxylapatite.

Laser Skin Resurfacing

Another non-invasive method of hand rejuvenation is laser skin resurfacing. This treatment utilizes a special laser to remove the outermost layer of skin on the hands. This can reduce the appearance of blemishes and bring newer, healthier skin to the surface.

Chemical Peels

Although chemical peels are typically associated with facial skin, some can also be used for hand rejuvenation. These chemical peels slough off the surface layer of skin on the hands to reveal healthier, more evenly toned skin.

Your Hand Rejuvenation Consultation

The first step of your hand rejuvenation treatment will be to have a consultation with Dr. Landford. After examining your hands and listening to your aesthetic goals, she will help you determine which hand rejuvenation treatment is the best fit for your needs. Understanding your current health, medical history, allergies and any medications you are taking helps Dr. Landford to determine which treatments fit your needs. Dr. Landford will then use all of this information to create a treatment plan that’s custom-tailored to your situation.

What Should I Expect During the Treatment?

The specifics of your treatment will depend on which hand rejuvenation treatment you’re undergoing. If you opt for fat transfer hand rejuvenation, you’ll likely be given local anesthesia with IV sedation. After that, Dr. Landford will use a small incision and liposuction to remove excess fat from the donor area of your body. She will then carefully inject it into the skin of your hands to create a more youthful appearance.

Other, non-surgical hand rejuvenation treatments will likely only require a topical anesthetic. Depending on the details of your procedure, your hand rejuvenation treatment will likely take between 15 minutes and an hour to complete. You should be able to return home shortly after your procedure is finished.

How Long Is the Recovery Time?

After your hand rejuvenation procedure, Dr. Landford will give you specific recovery instructions depending on the details of the treatment. After fat transfer hand rejuvenation, you’ll likely need to rest for a few days before returning to work, and you may need to avoid strenuous exercise for two to four weeks.

With laser skin resurfacing, dermal fillers, or a chemical peel, the recovery process should be extremely quick. After these treatments, you can typically return to work within a day or two and be completely back to your normal routine in under a week.

Am I a Candidate for Hand Rejuvenation?

Adults who would like to achieve more youthful-looking hands could be good candidates for hand rejuvenation. To be an ideal candidate for the treatment, you should:

  • Be in generally good physical health
  • Have wrinkles, loose skin, and/or other cosmetic skin issues on the backs of your hands
  • Have the desire for smoother, firmer skin on the backs of your hands
  • Have reasonable expectations
  • Be a non-smoker
  • Not be currently pregnant or breastfeeding

How Long Will It Take To See Results After Hand Rejuvenation?

With most hand rejuvenation treatments, you will notice improvements in the appearance of your hands immediately. However, each procedure offers a different timeline for when you will see the final results:

  • Fat Transfer: Up to six months
  • Dermal Fillers: Two to three days
  • Laser Skin Resurfacing: Two to three weeks
  • Chemical Peels: About two weeks

The results of fat transfer hand rejuvenation will last for multiple years and can be permanent. Laser skin resurfacing results can last for three to five years, whereas dermal fillers and chemical peels are typically much more temporary solutions.
