Refresh Your Look with Breast Implant Revision

Over time, the appearance of breast implants can change for various reasons, including weight changes, the natural effects of aging, and certain complications with the implants. As a result, you may not be as satisfied with the way your implants look as you once were. With certain types of complications, your implants may even be causing you discomfort or other significant symptoms. If you find yourself in this situation and would like to switch your current breast implants out for new ones, you should consider breast implant revision.

What Is Breast Implant Revision?

Breast implant revision is a surgical procedure performed to remove breast implants and replace them with new, customized implants. The surgery can be performed for aesthetic, medical, or comfort-related reasons. In many cases, patients will choose to switch to a new type of breast implant during the procedure (for example, removing their saline implants and replacing them with silicone implants). Breast implant revision is often combined with a breast lift to create more complete breast enhancement.

Your Breast Implant Revision Consultation

Before undergoing breast implant revision surgery, you’ll need to schedule a consultation with Dr. Landford. During this consultation, Dr. Landford will discuss the procedure with you, answer your questions, and ask you why you’re interested in the surgery. She will then work with you to create a treatment plan that’s custom-tailored to your specific needs and aesthetic preferences. This will include deciding on the type and size of your new breast implants.

What Should I Expect During the Surgery?

Your breast implant revision will be performed as an outpatient surgery using either local anesthesia with IV sedation or general anesthesia. Once the anesthesia has taken effect, Dr. Landford will start by making small incisions either around the areolas or beneath the inframammary folds. Next, she will carefully remove your current breast implants and their scar tissue. Finally, she will insert and position your new implants either beneath the chest muscles or between the muscles and skin. Dr. Landford will then close the incisions with stitches and apply bandages.
On average, breast implant revision usually takes between one and three hours to complete. After a few hours of monitoring, you’ll be able to leave, but someone else will have to drive you home.

Am I a Candidate for Breast Implant Revision?

Adults who would like to replace their breast implants could be good candidates for breast implant revision. Ideal candidates for the surgery should:

  • Be unsatisfied with the size and/or position of their breast implants
  • Be experiencing breast implant complications
  • Have the desire to switch breast implant types
  • Be in generally good physical health
  • Have reasonable expectations
  • Not be currently pregnant or nursing
  • Be a non-smoker

How Long Is the Recovery Time?

After your breast implant revision surgery, you’ll likely experience some swelling, bruising, and discomfort, and you’ll also need to wear a surgical support bra for several weeks. You should be able to return to work in one or two weeks, but you’ll need to avoid strenuous physical activity and heavy lifting for at least four to six weeks.
