Rediscover Your Youthful Glow with SkinPen Microneedling

Do you want to dramatically improve the look and feel of your skin with minimal downtime? Not ready for lasers or other invasive procedures? SkinPen may be the answer you’ve been looking for! SkinPen, a type of microneedling, is an FDA-cleared device that uses fine needles to create controlled punctures in the upper layer of the skin.

This controlled injury causes the body’s natural wound repair response, stimulating collagen production and sending a cascade of restorative compounds to the treatment area. The result is effective remodeling of the skin while keeping the overall structure of the skin intact. Best of all, SkinPen is safe for all skin types and skin concerns!

To learn more about SkinPen microneedling, reach out to our Bethesda, Maryland office and set up your initial consultation today. SkinPen microneedling is just one of a wide range of non-surgical treatments we offer, giving us the ability to help you enjoy exciting results with little to no downtime and a minimal recovery period.

Is Microneedling Right for Me?

Acne scarring, old injuries, wrinkles, and fine lines can age and wear your facial features. Microneedling promotes smoother, healthier-looking skin and an overall more youthful and attractive appearance. This treatment can also help correct pigmentation issues such as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), melasma, and lentigines.

Chevy Chase Facial Plastic Surgery provides care to patients who typically choose our microneedling services because they want more noticeable improvement than they have gotten with treatments such as microdermabrasion or chemical peels. The technology offers a predictable and effective avenue for rejuvenating your skin and facial features.

The Benefits of Microneedling

During your microneedling session, your practitioner will use a handheld device to create tiny channels into the topmost layers of your facial tissue. The process stimulates collagen production in your skin while also releasing a helpful cascade of natural growth factors. It also lets us introduce rejuvenating agents into the subdermal layers, encouraging the development of new, healthy skin.

Why Choose Microneedling?

Our doctors may recommend microneedling if you are ready for a more intensive approach than other skin treatments offer. In addition, we sometimes advise our patients to combine microneedling with other regimens, like microdermabrasion, chemical peels, and home skincare products.

Following your treatment, you’ll enjoy:

  • A reduction in the number and depth of acne scars
  • Softer, less noticeable scarring from trauma
  • Fewer and less prominent wrinkles and facial lines
  • A decrease in pigmented areas of skin
  • Improved tone and texture
  • A restoration of your youthful glow

What Is the SkinPen Treatment Like?

The SkinPen microneedling treatment is performed in our comfortable Bethesda, Maryland office by our well-trained staff. Most patients experience mild to minimal discomfort, and a topical numbing cream will be applied prior to your treatment for increased comfort.

A minimum of three treatments is typically recommended, though most patients will need a series of six treatments for optimal results. Treatments are performed every four weeks, and the use of medical-grade skincare is recommended in between treatments.

Your skin will appear slightly pink to red immediately after your treatment session, similar to what you might experience with a sunburn. The addition of plasma to the surface of the skin can reduce the redness a little quicker and aid in collagen stimulation and pore reduction.

The Microneedling Experience

  • You will receive a topical numbing cream, which will promote your comfort during the microneedling process.
  • Your provider will treat your skin with the microneedling device. We will apply the device to the entire face unless you are only targeting a single scar or very limited skin issues.
  • This ensures that your facial features post-treatment have a consistent, healthy, and smooth appearance.
  • After microneedling, we will apply one or several rejuvenating agents. These may include hyaluronic acid gel, as well as other advanced growth factors to help rejuvenate your face.
  • You and your provider will discuss which rejuvenating agents are the best fit for your needs during your consultation. After the serum dries in place, your treatment will be finished.

What Will My Recovery Be Like?

One of the best parts about microneedling is that there is practically no downtime. That being said, your face may have a reddish appearance with some markings from the device in the hours following your microneedling treatment session, so it may be best to recover at home until this dissipates. For many people, this redness takes on the appearance of a light sunburn or a wonderful glow, and typically fades after just a day or two

If the treatment was intense, some patients experience peeling, but this is rare. Depending on the depth of your treatment, you may see some temporary marks from the device. You’ll be restricted from wearing makeup for 24 hours to give your skin time to breathe so it can start repairing itself. It will also be important to make sure that you avoid excessive sweating or sun exposure for 72 hours following the procedure.

We recommend not scheduling social events the day of or after your SkinPen treatment, but every patient is different and responds to the treatment in their own way. During your consultation, we’ll give you a very clear idea of what you can expect both during and after your treatment session, along with aftercare instructions that will help you preserve and maintain your results for as long as possible.

Combination Treatments with SkinPen

We love combining treatments for maximum results! With SkinPen microneedling, we are happy to provide multiple combination treatments to achieve your best results. We are able to combine SkinPen with the following treatments:

Retinol Peels

Chemical peels are designed to help improve the texture and appearance of the skin. The application of a retinol peel will increase cell turnover and post-treatment exfoliation. Increase peeling is expected with this combination treatment.

Aerolase Neo

This treatment is ideal for any and all skin concerns and is safe for everyone. Aerolase Neo is FDA-cleared for various skincare concerns, including skin laxity, hyperpigmentation, acne, acne scarring, hair reduction, and more.

PRP Therapy

Platelet Rich Plasma, otherwise known as PRP, helps repair cells by utilizing growth factors within the plasma. The addition of PRP helps accelerate collagen production. It can also improve healing and decrease redness and swelling seen after SkinPen microneedling. This treatment is commonly referred to as “vampire facial.”

Microneedling FAQ

Does it hurt to have the treatment?

How much better will my acne scars be after microneedling?

What can I do to get the most benefit from microneedling?

Which conditions can be treated with microneedling?

How do I know if microneedling is right for me?

Does it hurt to have the treatment?

Very few of our patients report discomfort from the process. Even with more intensive treatment—for example, the treatment for deep facial scars—patients don’t usually describe microneedling as painful.

How much better will my acne scars be after microneedling?

While every patient is different, we typically see a 20% to 30% reduction in the prominence of acne scars. This can make a big difference in the aesthetics of your appearance.

What can I do to get the most benefit from microneedling?

As a comprehensive provider of facial cosmetic treatments, we can guide you in your home skincare regimen. Using retinol or Retin-A on a daily basis may improve your results. Dr. Porter may also recommend that you combine microneedling with Aerolase Neo in the same session for the most effective outcome.

Which conditions can be treated with microneedling?

Microneedling is an excellent treatment for patients suffering from numerous kinds of skin issues. Because the treatment penetrates the deepest layers of your skin, it reaches skin issues at their source, fighting them from the inside out. While microneedling can be used to give the skin a revitalizing boost, it works well when targeting the following conditions:

  • Facial lines and wrinkles, especially those that have formed around the mouth and eyes due to age
  • Uneven skin tone, including melasma (brownish patches on the cheeks, bridge of the nose, forehead, chin, and upper lip) and hyperpigmentation (when patches of skin become darker than surrounding skin)
  • Scars from surgery or acne, which can often be reduced in prominence by 20 to 30 percent
  • Pores that are big and noticeable on the face
  • Stretch marks in areas where the patient has gained or lost weight

How do I know if microneedling is right for me?

Of course, not every patient with one of these conditions will qualify for microneedling. The patient must have healthy skin that’s free of infection or skin breakouts. Additionally, some skin types just don’t respond well to specific treatments.

That’s why Dr. Porter carefully examines each and every patient at their initial consultation to determine whether or not microneedling is a good tool for their specific skin condition.

If it’s not, she will work with them to find a procedure that can help correct their blemishes, erase signs of aging, or tackle whatever other problem is concerning the patient. Dr. Porter will also recommend other procedures that work in conjunction with microneedling.
