Acne scarring, old injuries, wrinkles, and fine lines can age and wear your facial features. Microneedling promotes smoother, healthier-looking skin and an overall more youthful and attractive appearance. Treatments can also help correct pigmentation issues such as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), melasma, and lentigines.
Chevy Chase Facial Plastic Surgery provides care to patients throughout Washington, DC, Maryland, and Northern Virginia. Patients typically choose our microneedling services because they want more noticeable improvement than they have gotten with treatments such as microdermabrasion or chemical peels. The technology offers a predictable and effective avenue for rejuvenating your skin and facial features.
The Benefits of Microneedling
With the treatment, we use a handheld device to create tiny channels into the deeper layers of facial tissue. The process stimulates collagen production in the skin and releases natural growth factors. It also lets us introduce rejuvenating agents into the subdermal layers, encouraging the development of new, healthy skin.
Following treatment, CCFPS patients typically see:
- A reduction in the number and depth of acne scars.
- Softer, less noticeable scarring from trauma.
- Fewer and less prominent wrinkles and facial lines.
- A decrease in pigmented areas of skin.
Our doctors may recommend microneedling if you are ready for a more intensive approach than other skin treatments offer. In addition, we sometimes advise our Washington, DC patients to combine microneedling with other regimens, like microdermabrasion, chemical peels, and home skincare products.
CCPFS also supports patients with Aerolase Neo®, a laser-based approach to treating scars, blemishes, and wrinkles. Microneedling tends to work a bit better on wrinkles but about same as Aerolase on pigmentation, so we can discuss the advantage of each technology as part of your consultation.
CCFPS and Your Care
Focused. CCFPS exclusively provides facial cosmetic treatments, which we have designed around the needs and lifestyles of our patients. On a daily basis, our team performs procedures ranging from non-invasive options like microneedling to complex facial surgeries, and we are dedicated to providing results that are aesthetically appealing and natural-looking.
Expert. Our founder, Dr. Jennifer Porter, brings more than 20 years of experience and double-board certification to the treatment of patients in the Washington, DC area.
Personalized. Comprehensive consultation is a hallmark of the patient experience at Chevy Chase Facial Plastic Surgery. Dr. Porter will lead your initial visit in partnership with the licensed nurse who will perform your microneedling treatment. We will talk with you about the concerns you want to address, evaluate your needs, and advise you based on your treatment options.
Patient-centric. We have a lot of experience working with patients who have varied skin types. This is important because African American, Latina, and Asian patients may benefit from certain treatments over other options. We can offer a range of solutions to meet the individual patient’s needs.
Treatment with Microneedling
Patients can often have a microneedling appointment on the same day as their initial consultation. We see the best results when patients have a series of treatments — typically six sessions in all — each spaced about one month apart.
CCFPS offers Washington, DC patients both the Collagen P.I.N. and the Micro P.I.N. The former device allows our nurses to treat sites more intensively, while the latter is a great tool for less extensive scarring, wrinkles, and blemishes. Dr. Porter can recommend an approach based on a comprehensive examination.
As part of your treatment:
- You will receive a topical numbing cream, which will promote your comfort during the microneedling process.
- Your nurse will treat your skin with the microneedling device. We will apply the device to the entire face unless you are only targeting a single scar or very limited skin issues. This ensures that your facial features post-treatment have a consistent, healthy, and smooth appearance.
- After microneedling, we will apply one or several rejuvenating agents. These may include hyaluronic acid gel, growth factors, and platelet rich plasma (PRP). You and your doctor will discuss which rejuvenating agents are the best fit for your needs during your consultation. After the serum dries in place, your treatment will be finished.
Washington, DC-area patients who come to us for microneedling for the first time often want to know if there is downtime or visible signs of the procedure afterward. While there is no restriction on your activity, you may want to wait until the next morning to go out and be sociable, since your skin may have a reddish appearance for a few hours and since we’ll advise you against wearing makeup for 24 hours.
Depending on the depth of your treatment, you may see some temporary marks from the device. Other patients simply have a somewhat rosy appearance. We may recommend that you reapply hyaluronic gel at home or that leave the growth factors or PRP in place until the next morning. By the end of your sixth microneedling treatment, you can expect to see a significant improvement in the quality of your skin and the reduction of scars, wrinkles, and pigmentation.
What Patients Want to Know About Microneedling
- Does it hurt to have the treatment?
Very few of our Washington, DC patients report discomfort from the process. Even with more intensive treatment — for example, treatment for deep facial scars — patients don’t usually describe microneedling as painful.
- How much better will my acne scars be after microneedling?
While every patient is different, we typically see a 20% to 30% reduction in the prominence of acne scars. This can make a big difference in the aesthetics of your appearance.
- What can I do to get the most benefit from microneedling?
As a comprehensive provider of facial cosmetic treatments, we can guide you in your home skincare regimen. Using retinol or Retin-A on a daily basis may improve your results. Dr. Porter may also recommend that you combine microneedling with Aerolase Neo in the same session for the most effective outcome.
- What’s the Recovery Time for Microneedling?
One of the best parts about microneedling is that there is practically no downtime. That being said, the face may have a reddish appearance with some markings from the device in the hours following the microneedling procedure, so it may be best to recover at home until this dissipates. For many people, this redness takes on the appearance of a light sunburn or a wonderful glow. If the treatment was intense, some patients can have some peeling, but this is rare. Patients will be restricted from wearing makeup for 24 hours to give the skin time to breathe so it can start repairing itself.
In the days following the procedure it is good to avoid sunscreen for the first 24 to 26 hours as it can be an irritant to the skin with open microchannels. During this time it is good to use products that will penetrate these channels such as hyaluronic acid, SkinMedica HA5 or stem cell products such as Lifeline Night Cream.
Once the initial symptoms of recovery fade, it takes about six to eight weeks to start noticing improvements, as the skin needs time to regenerate. Most patients will require multiple treatments spaced about four weeks apart to achieve optimal results, though this is something Dr. Porter will discuss at the initial consultation.
- Which Conditions Can Be Treated With Microneedling?
Microneedling is an excellent treatment for patients suffering from numerous kinds of skin issues in the Washington, DC, area. Because the treatment penetrates to the deepest layers of skin, it reaches skin issues at the source, fighting them from the inside out. While microneedling can be used to give the skin a revitalizing boost, it works well when targeting the following conditions:
- Facial lines and wrinkles, especially those that have formed around the mouth and eyes due to age
- Uneven skin tone, including melasma (brownish patches on the cheeks, bridge of the nose, forehead, chin, and upper lip) and hyperpigmentation (when patches of skin become darker than surrounding skin)
- Scars from surgery or acne, which can often be reduced in prominence by 20 to 30 percent
- Pores that are big and noticeable on the face
- Stretch marks in areas where the patient has gained or lost weight
Of course, not every patient with one of these conditions will qualify for microneedling. The patient must have healthy skin that’s free of infection or skin breakouts. Additionally, some skin types just don’t respond well to specific treatments. That’s why Dr. Porter carefully examines each and every patient at their initial consultation to determine whether or not microneedling is a good tool for their specific skin condition. If it’s not, she will work with them to find a procedure that can help correct their blemishes, erase signs of aging, or tackle whatever other problem is concerning the patient. Dr. Porter will also recommend other procedures that work in conjunction with microneedling.
